During the visit, the Minister was given an in-depth presentation of Aermatica3D's latest innovations, including the seeding drones kit recently delivered to the department of Environment and Climate Change of Southwest Somalia. These drones, equipped with cutting-edge kits designed and manufactured by Aermatica3D, play a crucial role in the region's reforestation and environmental protection efforts.

The visit also served as the official signing of a strategic collaboration agreement between Aermatica3D and the government of Southwest Somalia. This agreement signifies the beginning of a comprehensive cooperation project, with Aermatica3D already initiating the first phase of training in Baidoa, Somalia. The agreement provides, as part of a project of close cooperation between Aermatica3D and the government authority of the state of South West Somalia, training activities for Somali personnel on new drone technologies and the supply of drones customized by Aermatica3D, for the reforestation project, but also for environmental monitoring activities with a view to environmental sustainability in support of climate change management.

The Minister and Aermatica3D engaged in productive discussions on the broader applications of drone technology in managing climate change and protecting the environment. Both parties emphasized their shared vision of leveraging innovative technological solutions to improve the quality of life for the people of Somalia.

The S-Box is a seed dispenser kit that can be installed on lightweight industrial drones, transforming them into powerful tools for the fast, automated, and precise distribution of seeds over large areas. This product was developed with the goal of optimizing reforestation and agricultural practices while ensuring maximum efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The seeds are coated with charcoal mixed with fertilizer. The charcoal coating prevents the seeds from being eaten by insects and birds. When the seed balls are dropped in the target area, once exposed to rain, the charcoal coating is washed away, allowing the seeds to start growing.

Baidoa - In an effort to increase efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation, the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) through Aermatica3D has trained officials from the Southern State's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change -West on the application of agricultural drones for the release of seeds for reforestation. Aermatica3D has specifically designed and developed the S-Box, a seed distribution kit specifically integrated on the DJI Matrice M300 drone which uses the BLY3D app for managing the kit and ground data collection. The seeds are coated with charcoal mixed with fertilizer to prevent the seeds from being eaten by insects and birds. When these “seed balls” are dropped into the target area, once exposed to rain, the carbon coating is washed away, exposing the seeds to growth.

The three-day specialized training, held in Baidoa, provided Somali Ministry of Environment officials with practical skills and knowledge on the precise use of drones to release tree seeds for reforestation in hard-to-reach areas.
Ms. Idil Muse, Technical Advisor to the South West State Minister of Environment and Climate Change, said the newly acquired skills will greatly enhance the Ministry's ability to implement large-scale reforestation projects and expressed gratitude to UNSOS for the noble initiative.

“The training was impactful; we benefited a lot from it,” said Mohamed Jama, UNSOS environmental affairs officer who also attended the training. “Using drones to release seed balls to improve plant cover is new to us. We know how climate change has affected Somalia and are happy to have acquired the new skills to make a difference in our communities,” Mohamed added.

Christine Wachira of the Field Technology Section (FTS) of UNSOS said that previously, the FTS had trained on Micro Unmanned Aerial Systems (MUAS) operations to improve the operational effectiveness of troops and had now expanded the scope to support environmental initiatives.
The training, conducted by the Environmental Unit, under the Office of the Director of Mission Support and the Geographic Information System Unit under the FTS, covered various aspects of drone operations, including flight planning, Seed payload and maintenance. Participants got hands-on experience with drones and learned safety protocols to ensure responsible and effective use of the technology.

According to Richard Oyoo, head of the UNSOS Environment Unit, the use of drones for seed dispersal is expected to significantly increase the efficiency of reforestation efforts, which are often laborious and time-consuming when done manually.

“Due to the security situation in Somalia, we had to come up with innovative ways to plant trees and take care of the environment. We had this idea of using drones to drop capsules containing seeds in inaccessible areas,” said Dr. Oyoo. He highlighted the importance of using the technology as part of the broader efforts of the United Nations in Somalia to mitigate their carbon footprint from the operation of diesel generators and minimize the negative impact of its operations in Somalia by increasing tree planting as well as improving renewable energy.

Dini Abdinur Mohamed, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the South West State, highlighted the importance of incorporating technology into environmental conservation initiatives, particularly in Somalia. “The South West is one of the regions most adversely affected by climate change. To be part of this innovative drone training, which will eventually be used to plant trees to increase our vegetation cover, is great, to put it mildly,” he said. the minister stated.

The Agras T30 is DJI's top-of-the-line agricultural drone in Europe. Thanks to investments promoted by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) of the Lombardy Region and the European Union for the Innovation and Competitiveness sector, Aermatica3D has studied and implemented a flying proximity system for cleaning and weeding of vertical walls with drone, such as ancient walls and facades of prestigious buildings such as ancient palaces.

Currently these operations are carried out using traditional solutions based on raised platforms, where it is possible to access from a lower roadway or operated manually through trained people who needs to climb onto the vertical surfaces to be treated.
Often the ancient walls subject to deterioration due to the widespread presence of weeds border watercourses and are characterized by conditions that make it very complicated, if not impossible to safely carry out weeding and cleaning operations. In other cases, the hight and the size of the surfaces to be treated make operations with traditional means complicated, risky and very expensive.
Therefore, as part of the CleanFly project, Aermatica3D has proposed a technological solution with drones that makes this kind of treatment possible with low costs, without impact on the environment and without danger to operators.
The request for such a solution comes directly from the Italian public administrations that oversee the cultural heritage that requires cleaning treatments and from specialized operators who still operate with traditional means. Often the complexity and costs related to activities carried out manually and with traditional means, determine costs that cannot be faced by public administrations and make it impossible for companies that provide services in the sector to be able to prepare a sustainable economic proposals for customers.
Aermatica3D, in developing the CleanFly project, starts from the research and experimentation already carried out in collaboration with the SGD Group and the Municipality of Treviso in 2020, for an experimentation with drones which would allow to weed the sections of the ancient walls of Treviso, otherwise unreachable or difficult to handle.

The solution covered by the CleanFly project is characterized by an industrial drone such as the DJI Matrice 300 RTK, specially customized to become a suitable and optimized system to perform the application described, i.e. distribute liquid product in flight in a horizontal direction on a vertical surface almost in direct contact in a very complex, urban operating scenario with little space and many obstacles. The automated distribution system is powered from the ground with a special high capacity sprayer pump placed on the ground and connected to the drone by means of a pipe to allow adequate distribution capacity of the liquid.

In the case of weeding treatments on the ancient walls, the already tested liquid product to be distributed is a biological liquid that is not at all invasive for the environment and is highly effective in contrasting the deterioration of the ancient walls.
The drone is equipped with sensors and customized software to have a high operational control and to be able to fly in a safe and controlled way at close range from the surface to be treated. The customized distribution system allows the desired quantity of liquid to be distributed in an appropriately directed manner on the surface, minimizing product drift and ensuring uniform coverage of the surface being treated. The proposed solution derives from the technologies now widely used in the agricultural sector for the distribution of liquid biological products with drones that Aermatica3D has extensively tested in the past during research and experimentation activities with the Fojanini Foundation in Sondrio, the Consorzio dei Vini del Candia, the Institut Français de la Vigne et du Vin in France, the phytosanitary service of the Lombardy Region and which it offers today on the Italian and European market.
The same technology can be used in the application of liquid products on tall trees as can be the scenario of the fight against the pine processionary which today creates many problems in parks and cities. In fact, the processionary, in addition to causing extensive damage to plants, causes dangers for people and animals due to irritation and possible allergic reactions as a result of contact with the skin or ingestion of hair by pets.


The CleanFly project is an experimental development of an innovative technology and responds to the need to protect and enhance the territory and cultural heritage in addition to the need for operators to work safely. The operators who currently provide this service will no longer be forced to carry out dangerous manual activities in contact with herbicides harmful to humans. Instead, they will be able to work remotely, instead of being directly involved in dispensing cleaning liquids. The operation is carried out through a console of the mechatronic system, drone and distribution kit, for the controlled dispensing of cleaning and weeding products.

The conference "Techniques and technologies for sustainable agriculture" was held on 29 April last, hosted by the Navarra foundation at Borgo Le Aie in Voghiera (province of Ferrara).
The conference, which began in the late morning to also allow those arriving from outside the region to attend, was divided into two moments: after the institutional greetings of the president Nicola Gherardi Ravalli Modoni, prof. Stefano Giatti illustrated a report on agriculture of yesterday, today and what will be tomorrow.
Four companies partnered at this conference: Aermatica3D, 2A1901 by Arvensis, Koppert and Agrigeodron. Companies that are very different from each other, but nonetheless connected in synergy to achieve a common result: sustainability. Professor Giatti then kicked off a round table where the partner companies took turns presenting each their own strategy, with a clear impression of common synergy.
Aermatica3D, based in Como, specializes, as Paolo Marras explained, in the construction of distribution kits for useful insects, powders, granules and liquids, to be mounted on drones for use in agriculture.
2A1901 is the direct distributor for Italy of Arvensis products (a company that produces biostimulant basic substances and microbiology), as reported by the owner Carlo Stagni. The company is booming throughout Italy.
Koppert is a world leader in breeding and distribution of beneficial insects for biocontrol in agriculture. Nicola Vicario (agronomist and entomologist) illustrated not only the whole world of beneficial insects and their functions, but also how much these techniques have taken hold in Italy as well.
Agrigeodron, owned by Raimondi Luca (one of the founding partners of the Ferrara start-up), is a very young company but is already among the first in Italy to offer agricultural services with very sophisticated technologies, linked to the world of drones.

The company today boasts a fleet of aircraft made up of 7 professional drones with various characteristics, from survey drones weighing around 4 kg, to then move on to insect distribution with weights ranging from 6 to 25 kg to liquid distribution ones that can approaching 150 kg. The second phase of the conference took place in the field with a practical demonstration of Agrigeodron's survey and distribution drones, giving a better idea of how much this technology can help the entire agricultural sector. The field test was carried out by a 17-year-old student of the Navarra Brothers Agricultural Institute, Raimondi Matteo (the youngest and most trained technician in Italy), on aeronautical systems of this type, who demonstrated his great capabilities of drone pilot with maximum weight up to 150 kg.
On 16 May in Florence, at the Coldiretti Toscana headquarters was held the Oliviculture 4.0 conference, the final event of the Olimpolli Montagnani Operational Group.
At 09:00 the President of Coldiretti Toscana Fabrizio Filippi opened the meeting, followed by speeches by Federico Montagnani (Tenuta Montagnani), Claudio Cantini (CNR IBE), Stefano Pattaro (Consorzio Agrari d'Italia), Giampaolo Cai and Marco Romi (University of Siena), Gianni Tacconi (BIOTAC), Guido Sabatinelli (GUISA Biotechnology Devices), Paolo Marras (Aermatica3D) and Lorenzo Marcolini (Impresa Verde Grosseto, AGER).
The Olimpolli Montagnani Operational Group (financed with measure 16 of the 2014-2020 Rural Development Plan of the Tuscany Region) aims to solve the problem of poor pollination of the olive tree, which affects the overall productivity of the olive groves, verifying from a practical point of view the effect of pollen dispersion on fruit set and profitability per hectare.
The Operational Group, in fact, intends to raise the productivity of the olive groves without any change in the corporate structures simply with the controlled contribution, currently identified as ideal, of the best pollen for the variety of interest.
Pollination activities are carried out using machinery never used in olive growing, although existing and used in other areas. Some, for example the Soffi@polline Biotac, have been developed for the pollination of kiwis, others are only being introduced on walnuts and pistachios (drone with pollen distribution kit).
The main innovation consists in the distribution of pollen on plants to be carried out by drone at the moment of best receptivity for the stigma. The technique, never applied before on olive trees, takes its cue from some tests carried out on other wood species.
A further innovation consists in verifying the various aspects related to the distribution of pollen in olive growing, which will involve the involvement not only of farms but also of some Italian machinery manufacturers. It is estimated that the repercussions on the primary sector are important because an increase in fruit setting and consequent productivity estimated at around 20-25% is expected.
This technique can affect all Tuscan olive groves, even the traditional ones, without any significant change in the farm structure, not requiring onerous interventions for farms. The project therefore intends to put into operation and test, within some model farms, the system for controlling flowering, distributing pollen on the flowers, verifying fruit setting and the trend of summer and harvest production, analyzing the costs / benefits of this practice.
a) the implementation of an assisted pollination system that can be technically and economically evaluated;
b) the increase in the productivity of traditional olive groves;
c) the development of an innovation transmission network on a regional scale;
d) the evaluation of the use of drones in olive groves as a tool for pollen dispersion but potentially also for other agronomic purposes related to precision agriculture.

The initiative was born in 2014 thanks to the Italian CRO (Contract Research Organization) Agricola 2000 in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences (DISAFA) of the University of Turin. It consists of realizing demonstrative fields with the aim of exchanging information and discussing the management of different pests of the main agricultural crops in Italy.
We started with a work of comparison between different weeding strategies in corn in accordance with the National Action Plan (PAN) and in 2015 we introduced the strategies of controlling weed in soybean. From the next year, the theme of adjuvants and biostimulants products in mixture with the herbicide was added to the schedule of the event, firstly in corn and afterward in soybean. Then, three experimental fields on the grapevine and one on cereals were started in 2020.
